Standard of Dress
We believe the biblical truth that the attitudes of our hearts are reflected in the way we speak, act, and the choices we make. This carries over to the way we dress. At NLCS we desire to dress in way that communicates we take learning seriously, we are on the same team, and that we have a history and tradition. We have crafted selections that will reflect our values but still offer students room for individual expression.

The following types of clothing and shoes are unacceptable: leggings, jeggings, athletic shorts, sweats, yoga pants, flip flops, crocs or slides, and hoodies or crewnecks that do not have the NLCS logo.
Basic Guideline:
Dress neatly, be clean, be modest. A student should not wear anything which draws attention to oneself. Administration is the final authority as to interpretation.
Other Guidelines:
- Skirts must be at least knee-length as measured by the line at the back of the knee.
- Pants must have a dark neutral belt (black or brown) and be tucked in for boys beginning in 5th grade. Secondary girls do not need to tuck in their shirts.
- 5th – 12th grade P.E. students must order an NLCS P.E. shirt. NLCS will place a bulk order for PE shirts at the beginning of the school year. Black neutral athletic shorts, of an appropriate length, and athletic shoes are required for P.E.
- Blue jean or tan shorts may be worn 1st quarter (August - October) and 4th quarter (April – May). Shorts must reach the middle of the thigh (no short shorts).
- Jackets, coats, and non-uniform sweaters may not be worn in the classroom but may be worn for recess.
- No hats are to be worn in the building.
- Hair must be clean and well-groomed. It must be kept out of the student’s face. Additionally, it may not be dyed an unnatural color.
- No tattoos, permanent or temporary, may show.
- Hoodies or crewnecks that do not have the NLCS logo must not be worn to school.
- Boys may not have any piercings. Girls may have up to 3 piercings per ear and no other body piercings.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What do you mean by “neutral athletic shoes”? Most of the shoe is a neutral color, that is brown, black, white, navy, or gray. We understand that even neutral shoes may have some accent colors and these are acceptable as long as the dominant color is neutral. This does rule out any kind of light-up shoes.
- Can my student wear snow boots or hiking boots during the winter months? Yes.
